Rotary Club to host Lobster Classic Festival Jan. 23

VERO BEACH– The First Annual Treasure Coast Rotary Club Lobster Classic Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 23 along Ocean Drive at Humiston Park in Vero Beach.  Admission to the family oriented festival is free, with live music, fun kid’s areas and vendors.  Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and plan to stay for the day.

The highlight of the day will be the mouth-watering lobster meals available for purchase at $35 per person.  The dinner includes a pound and a half lobster, corn on the cob, potatoes, roll, coleslaw, soft drink or water, and priority seating in the Dining tent.

Other foods, wine, beer, water and soda will also be available for purchase.  Proceeds from the event benefit local charities.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Man charged after opening pipes in fire suppression system

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A man who deputies said purged the water supply to several businesses by opening up the pipes of a fire suppression system, was detained Friday. The man - identified as Cordero Laremy Mitchell - told deputies "he did it for the people who needs water," reports show. Mitchell's arrest report did not indicate there was a fire at the time of the incident. Deputies arrested Mitchell, 33, described as homeless, on a charge of preventing or obstructing the extinguishment of a fire. Mitchell was held Monday at the Indian River County Jail on $1,500 bond. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th.
