A healthy new start for people and pets

(ARA) – Most of us resolve to make a new start for ourselves every year, perhaps promising to eat healthier, get fit or improve relationships. While it’s always good to find new ways to be a better you, this year think about making it a joint effort with those in your household who don’t make resolutions – your pets.

Areas that you’d like to improve for yourself might be areas where your pet needs some help, too. After all, we often treat our pets like we treat ourselves – and plenty of people want to improve their pet’s health right along with their own. A recent survey shows that 64 percent of pet owners want to improve their dog’s health as well as their own in the coming year. To get started, create a list of healthy goals that can improve your lifestyle and see how they apply to your pet, too.

* Get moving. Cold weather might seem like a deterrent from starting a new exercise plan, but some creative thinking can lead to new, fun activities for you and your pet. Look into indoor activities that you can do with your dog, like using agility equipment, obedience training or going to indoor dog parks. You’ll be off the couch and getting your heart rate up – all while staying warm. If your dog’s coat is suited for outdoor activity, bundle up and take your dog for a walk or jog (adjust your speed and distance based on weather and you and your dog’s experience), but make sure that your dog’s pads are in good shape – the cold weather can cause them to crack.

* Eat right. Having a good diet isn’t all about cutting calories and fat – it’s also important that you’re eating natural foods that have good nutritional value. For your pet, choose a food that is packed with nutrients that can help his skin, coat and overall health. Top quality foods like Ultra holistic food for dogs from The Nutro Company incorporate vitamin-rich superfoods like blueberries and pumpkin and exclude wheat and ground yellow corn, aiding in your dog’s digestion. For variety, combine wet food with dry food or serve either as a stand-alone meal.

* Look your best, feel your best. A new hairstyle can change your perspective, but taking good care of your body can feel just as transformative. For both you and your pet, the harsh winter temperatures and dryness can cause uncomfortable, itchy skin. Choose moisturizing shampoos and washes that will make your hair and skin soft and keep your pet’s coat lustrous while keeping him comfortable. Remember not to share products with your pet, however. Items formulated for people can strip pets’ skin of its oils, drying it out even more.

* Don’t fear the doctor. Getting a yearly check-up should be on everyone’s to-do list. When scheduling doctor and dentist appointments for your family, be sure to call your veterinarian as well. Have your pet’s teeth checked – and cleaned, if they need it, and find out whether he needs to be updated on vaccinations.

* Keep it clean. This year, follow through on that plan to vacuum every other day and keep jackets in the closet. Keeping your home tidy and clean not only makes it more inviting, but it also creates a healthier environment. Be sure that your pet’s bedding and toys are part of your cleaning program. Wash beds and dog toys frequently, as allergens can build up on them and irritate family members or guests.

For most people, owning a pet is all about having a loving companion. Including your pet in your resolutions is a great way to improve health and happiness for you both, and when you work together, you’ll be able to spend more time together.
