Bette Johnson Bowman, Vero Beach

Bette Johnson Bowman died Nov. 10, 2010 at The Hospice House, Vero Beach after a long and arduous battle with dementia.

She was born in Claflin, Kan., Dec. 3, 1920 and raised by her devoted aunts and grandparents. Bowman’s was employed at Kenyon and Ekert in New York City; where she worked as an executive secretary to the president.

While in New York she met her husband to be Major Robert Bowman, U.S. Army and they were married in St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City.

Bowman lived in Darien, Conn., New Canaan, Conn., and most recently in Vero Beach.

While in Darien she volunteered for St. Luke’s Church, Thomas School, The American Red Cross and The American Cancer Society, Chairing one of their first fundraising galas in Darien.

Bowman enjoyed needlepoint, walking on the beach and playing golf at The Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda, Weeburn Country Club in Darien and John’s Island in Vero Beach.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Robert Gibson Bowman; one daughter, Meg (Steven) Bowman Mack, of Fairfield, Conn; two grandsons, Dr. Peter B. (Jessica) Mack, of Charlotte, N.C., and Christopher G. Mack, of Fairfield, Conn.

The family wishes to thank her faithful caregivers Shawnn, Elynore and Brenda and the nurses and volunteers of Hospice House Vero Beach.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Bowman may be made to the VNA Hospice House Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Florida 32960.

Services and interment will be private at the request of the family.
