Margaret Jean McCullers, 78, Vero Beach

Margaret Jean McCullers, 78, died Oct. 23, 2010, at VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach.

She was born in Walton County and lived in Vero Beach since 1954, coming from Walton County. Before retiring, she worked for Hogan & Sons Citrus in Vero Beach.

Survivors include her daughter, Monica Jean Wilson, of Vero Beach; brothers, Frank, Bobby and Horace Dean, all of Vero Beach; sisters, Liz Arnold, of Vero Beach, and Doris Wilcoxon of Old Fort, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sons, Randy and Roger McCullers; and brother, Martin Dean.

Memorial contributions may be made Special Equestrians of the Treasure Coast to honor Dr. Richard Penly, P.O. Box 651312, Vero Beach, FL 32965.

A memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

At least two beaches will be closed starting this weekend ahead of the beach restoration project, which will start back up next week, county officials said. The project aims to restore sand - which had been washed away by storms and hurricanes over the years - at the beaches. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Lifeguards said about 54,105 beachgoers flocked to the shore in January. The highest beach-attendance record of 65,700 was set in 2019 for Vero Beach, lifeguards said. Community Development Department closes in-person services

The Community Development Department closed in-person services Monday as county officials implement more health precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Officials plan to add more physical barriers to the front counters inside the building, which already has temperature scanners installed. County employees and those who visit county facilities are already required to wear masks inside. County Administrator Jason Brown was not immediately available to confirm reports that six employees in the Community Development Department tested positive for the virus.
