Jerry O. Conklin, 75, Vero Beach

Jerry O. Conklin, 75, died Oct. 14, 2010 at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach.

He was born in Watervliet, Mich., and l ived in Vero Beach for 12 years, coming from the Florida Keys. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Miami and served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Conklin was a pilot with United Airlines for 30 years where he ended his career on a Boeing 747-400. Prior to his years with United Airlines he flew high altitude planes for the government.

He was a member of ALPA, the national airline pilots association.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Anne.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." New Indian River County offices to open for business on July 1

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — New county offices are slated to open next month to serve citizens in the northern portion of the county.  The Indian River County property appraiser, tax collector and various other county departments will relocate to the new location at 1921 U.S. 1 in Sebastian, just south of Walmart on July 1 and open for business at 8 a.m. The newly renovated 18,000-square-foot Sebastian Corners shopping center purchased by the county in July 2017 for $2.65 million will serve as a one-stop shop for individuals to conduct business with several county departments in one convenient location, county officials said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
