Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings. More FWC officers to help with storm aftermath

More Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers will be sent to Houston, Texas, following additional requests from Texas for continued emergency assistance after Tropical Storm Harvey. On Saturday, 25 FWC officers, 17 high-water vehicles, two mobile command centers, eight shallow draft vessels and four patrol boats left for Houston. Thirty-seven FWC officers and 21 boats are currently headed to Houston to help with ongoing search and rescue and disaster response efforts, officials said.
