Ruth Mead Ross, 99, Vero Beach

Ruth Mead Ross, 99, died Oct. 4, 2010, at Dixie Oak Manor in Vero Beach.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and moved to Vero Beach in 2002, coming from Fishkill, N.Y.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Dutch Reform Church in Fishkill and of the Garden Club in Pittsburgh.

Survivors include her son, John Ross, of Vero Beach; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Thomas Ross; and a sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Indian River County Volunteer Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 2240, Vero Beach, FL 32961.

No local services are planned at this time.

Interment will follow this spring in Salem, Ohio.

Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Community Development Department closes in-person services

The Community Development Department closed in-person services Monday as county officials implement more health precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Officials plan to add more physical barriers to the front counters inside the building, which already has temperature scanners installed. County employees and those who visit county facilities are already required to wear masks inside. County Administrator Jason Brown was not immediately available to confirm reports that six employees in the Community Development Department tested positive for the virus.
