VERO BEACH, FL - The Young Democrats of Indian River County will host U.S. Senate candidate and state Representative Angie Nixon for a public town hall on Saturday, August 1, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Emerson Center in Vero Beach, 1590 27th Avenue. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature remarks from Nixon followed by an open question-and-answer session with attendees. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP in advance at indian-river-dec.solidarity.tech/angie-nixon-us-senate-town-hall. The town hall follows the club's recent vote to endorse Nixon for U.S. Senate at the Florida Young Democrats State Convention. Saturday's event brings the statewide candidate directly to the Treasure Coast for a face-to-face conversation with local voters, families, and first-time organizers. Nixon, a state representative from Jacksonville, is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. She faces Alex Vindman in the primary, with the winner set to challenge appointed Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November. In May, Nixon was arrested after staging a sit-in outside Governor Ron DeSantis's office in protest of the Legislature's mid-decade congressional redistricting. She now faces two misdemeanor charges and a trial scheduled for September, which she has publicly described as a “weaponization of justice.” Organizers say the Vero Beach town hall will focus on the issues driving Nixon's campaign, including Florida's affordability crisis, housing and insurance costs, and the fight over fair representation, and on why a statewide race runs through communities like Indian River County that are too often written off. “The Young Democrats of Indian River County endorsed Angie Nixon because she doesn't just talk about fighting for Floridians, she has actually put herself on the line to do it,” said Brighid Macchia, President of the Young Democrats of Indian River County. “They arrested her for standing up to Ron DeSantis, and she kept standing. That's the kind of courage young people in this county want to see, and we are proud to bring her to Vero Beach so our neighbors can hear from her directly.” “For too long, both parties have treated Indian River County like a place you drive through on the way to somewhere that matters. We're done with that,” said Colby Shock, former candidate for U.S. Congress, who is sponsoring the venue and promoting the event across his social media channels. “Angie Nixon is showing up here, in person, on a Saturday, and that tells you everything. When DeSantis had her arrested for protesting his rigged maps, he thought he'd make her disappear. Instead she's coming to Vero Beach. Come meet her.” EVENT DETAILS What: Town Hall with U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon When: Saturday, August 1, 2026, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Where: The Emerson Center, 1590 27th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL 32960 Cost: Free and open to the public RSVP: indian-river-dec.solidarity.tech/angie-nixon-us-senate-town-hall Host: Young Democrats of Indian River County About the Young Democrats of Indian River County The Young Democrats of Indian River County is the local chapter of the Florida Young Democrats, organizing young voters and volunteers across the Treasure Coast to elect Democrats up and down the ballot and build the next generation of local leadership.
