Richard Dale Scurlock, 68, Vero Beach

Richard Dale Scurlock was born on July 8, 1941 in Ventura, Calif., and attended local Ventura schools.

He joined the United States Navy on Oct. 18, 1958 and spent the next 7 months as a high school student and a sailor in the Navy. He was honorably discharged in October of 1962 after serving in the Western Pacific, Japan, the Philippines and Viet Nam.

He married Mary McKinney in June of 1963 in Oxnard, Calif., and they recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.

He joined the Plumber/Pipe Fitter Union in Ventura in 1964 and retired after 35 years in 1999. While working as a Plumber he attended college, became a licensed Insurance Agent, Stock Broker and Real Estate Agent.

During this time he also co-owned Commercial Enterprises a Vending Machine business and later Real Estate Investment company.

He has been a lifetime Democrat working on numerous political campaigns and a delegate to the Democrat conventions in both California and Florida. After a life threatening illness in December 2000 he retired to Florida to be near his daughter, Laura Sherman and her family in July 2001.

Until his recent illness was diagnosed 2 years ago, he was an active volunteer with the State Park at Sebastian Inlet and has enjoyed being an active member of the community.

He is survived by his wife, Mary McKinney Scurlock of Vero Beach, his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Michael Sherman of Vero Beach, his granddaughters, Jessica Sherman of Jacksonville, Rachel Savastano of Fort Pierce, Michelle Sherman of Palm Bay; his sister, Joyce Synovec of Port Hueneme, Calif., and a younger brother, John in California as well as numerous relatives and extended family in California and Florida.

He was preceded in death by his son, John Charles Scurlock and his parents.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be sent to Leukemia Society of America, Inc., 4360 North Lake Boulevard Suite 109, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 in memory of Richard Scurlock.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m., on July 2, 2010 at Strunk Funeral Home in Sebastian, followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Norm Holm, Calvary Chapel, officiating.
