Bernadette “Chi Chi” Stawara, 67, Vero Beach

Bernadette “Chi Chi” Stawara, 67, died June 19, 2010, at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

She was born in Detroit and lived in Vero Beach since 1971, coming from Dearborn, Mich. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church, Vero Beach.

Survivors include her brother, Frank Stawara of Vero Beach; brothers, Norbert Stawara of Novi, Mich., Leonard Stawara of Tallahassee, Jerome Stawara of Fowlerville, Mich., and Mark Stawara of Orange Park; and sister, Patricia Kobak of Dearborn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA/Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
