Senior Resource Association 5K Freedom Run/Fun Walk

VERO BEACH — Put on your running (or walking) shoes before you head to your Memorial Day BBQ this year, because the  Senior Resource Association is hosting their Annual 5k Freedom Run/ Fun Walk at Riverside Park on Monday, May 31, Memorial Day. Registration on race day at Riverside Park begins at 6:30 am, with race time at 7:15 am.

The entry fee is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event.  Registration forms are available at Runner’s Depot at 436 21st Street from 10 am to 5 pm, Friday, May 28 and Saturday May 29, or online at www.runnersdepotvb.com. The first 150 participants to register will receive a t-shirt and race bag.

Refreshments and snacks will be available for runners and walkers immediately after the race. There will also be live entertainment. Awards will be presented for top runners in each of the eight age groups (14 & under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & over.) The top three walkers overall will also be recognized.

In special honor of the race being held on Memorial Day, Senior Resource Association is recognizing 18 members of our US troops stationed in the Gulf as they race from their locations and submit their times post-race for recognition at SRA’s 5K Freedom Run/ Fun Walk.

The race at Riverside Park will also serve as a drop site for care packages that will be sent to US troops. SRA is inviting the community to bring donations of items such as drink mixes, candy, gum, beef jerky, travel-size toiletries, books, playing cards, crossword puzzles, Soduku, socks, t-shirts, travel-size sunscreen and lip balm to include in the packages sent to the soldiers.

The Senior Resource Association provides activities, education and services to seniors throughout Indian River including Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Care, and Senior Center activities.

SEBASTIAN — A 70-year-old Brevard County man was critically injured after being struck by a pickup truck while walking across U.S. 1 last week, fire rescue crews and sheriff's officials said. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. All five candidates for sheriff say the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month and subsequent nationwide protests will be an issue in the race here, and they expect to be asked about it as they campaign.
