LOWTHER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY[/caption] Belcher, who was from Vero Beach, received full military honors with an escort after his body was flown home and transported to a funeral home ahead of the Memorial Day Weekend. Military officers, veterans and law enforcement personnel gathered at the Vero Beach Regional Airport to honor the life of Private First Class Belcher. "He gave everything in service to the country he loved, and today, his community made sure he knew it," said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory reported Belcher died unexpectedly May 3 while on duty in Germany. He was 34. "Even though I didn't know him, he was still a brother in arms. He served his country," said Port St. Lucie resident Brendan Madayag, a retired U.S. Army specialist who watched the escort procession just outside the airport gate. "I believe it's due diligence to pay your respects to those in the military and those who continue to sacrifice for their country." A small jet carrying the casket landed about 3 p.m. at the Corporate Air Inc. facility at the Vero Beach Regional Airport, 2612 North Airport Drive. Officials with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, Vero Beach Police Department, Indian River County Fire Rescue and Florida Highway Patrol stood silently as U.S. Army officials received the casket. "God bless him and prayers for him and his family," said Tammy Grant, a U.S. Army veteran and board member for Next Generation Veterans of Indian River County, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing support groups and assistance for veterans. "They're going to get through it. It's going to be hard. There will be good days and bad days, but they'll get through it." Belcher's casket was draped with the American flag. The manner of death for Belcher, a 2011 Vero Beach High School graduate, was described by officials as an "honorable passing," though further details were not immediately available. Belcher received a military escort to Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, 1655 27th St., Vero Beach, about a mile and a half from the airport. A private funeral service will be held at a later date. Video by Nick Samuel Johnny Duncan, director of the Post 39 American Legion Riders based in Vero Beach, said it was vital for the organization to witness the escort procession for the fallen soldier.
