Investigators sorting out differing stories in Wednesday’s shooting

Update – 11:37 a.m. Thursday

FELLSMERE – The Fellsmere Police Department is still investigating a vehicle shooting in the area of Grant and State streets that occurred Wednesday afternoon. No one has been arrested or charged in the case as of yet.

“We don’t have any definitive answers,” Fellsmere Police Chief Scott Melanson said Thursday morning.

Authorities questioned six people who may have been involved in the shooting, including a woman who was driving the targeted vehicle and three men who were pulled over driving a green sport utility vehicle on County Road 510 near Powerline Road.

Authorities placed the three occupants in handcuffs for safety, Chief Melanson said. They were not taken into custody, though they were questioned at the police station.

The Fellsmere Police Department also was investigating a possible kidnapping in connection to the case. However, investigators no longer believe a kidnapping occurred, Chief Melanson said.

The man who emergency responders first thought had been kidnapped was found safe. That man told investigators he had not been kidnapped but that he had witnessed the incident.

While emergency responders said the incident could have been a “drug deal gone bad,” Chief Melanson said investigators are looking at numerous possible reasons for the shooting. They have not ruled out the possibility of a drug-related incident.

“We’ve got different stories,” the police chief said.

The woman who was shot at in her vehicle sustained a few small scratches, according to Melanson. And though several shots were fired, no one was struck.

“We may be working this for some time,” Chief Melanson said.
