Maria Nied, 48, Vero Beach

Maria Nied, 48, died March 21, 2010 of brain cancer at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

She was born in Darby, Pa., and lived most of her life in Reston, Va.

She graduated from Virginia Tech in 1986 with a degree in Architecture. She was a registered architect with the AIA, and later granted Emeritus status. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

She is survived by her parents Paul and Stella Nied of Vero Beach, her brother Eric Nied and nephew William of Front Royal, Va., and her 10-year-old son Kyle Nied.

She was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston.

Fellsmere among towns impacted by Hurricane Irma to get infrastructure award

Fellsmere is among several Florida towns that will receive an infrastructure award that will go toward restoration and improvement projects following the damage left behind by the 2017 Hurricane Irma, state officials said Friday. Gov. issues state of emergency; beaches to close ahead of Isaias

Friday evening update: A hurricane warning and a storm surge watch were issued for Indian River County Friday afternoon.
