SEBASTIAN – Sebastian Rotary Club members hope to see 10,000 people walk Riverview Park getting ideas for how to spruce up their homes this spring during their Fourth Annual Home and Garden Show.
Visitors to the park stopped at various booths to see how a special fiber cloth could wipe away grease, hairspray and dried toothpaste from mirrors and perused various ferns looking for a new home.
“We’re just looking for ideas,” said Vero Beach resident Ed Greco as he and his wife, Jean, finished making a selection at the Shells and Things booth.
The Grecos had picked up an unpainted ceramic turtle for their granddaughter, Ravena, who will be coming for a visit from up north soon.
“It’s something different for her to do,” Jean said of being able to paint the turtle as she sees fit.
Others who came out to Riverview Park sat and listened to various blue grass bands and sampled gyros, ice cream and other treats. Several people walked around, carrying lawn ornaments of sculpted butterflies, wind chimes, and potted plants.
“Quite a few people have stopped by,” said Sebastian resident and Ultimate Green Clean vendor.
On a large mirror, she smeared Vaseline – simulating cooking grease – splattered toothpaste and spritzed hairspray, and with a slightly damp MiraFiber cloth, wiped the glass clean without effort.
With one cloth and a gallon of water, Palos said she could wash her car. She’s even used the cloths to wash her home’s windows, something she once paid $300 to do, she said.
Palos was one of several vendors out at the park Saturday and said she plans to be out again on Sunday.
Lisa Davidson, of Shells and Things located on Ocean Drive in Vero Beach, said she decided to set up a booth at the Home and Garden Show because she recently joined the Sebastian Rotary Club.
“It’s a lot of fun,” she said of getting out of her store and being in the park.
Sebastian Rotarian and Fellsmere City Councilman Joel Tyson said he was pleased with turnout Saturday.
“It’s a comfortable crowd,” he said. “It’s not a mob.”
The Home and Garden Show is the club’s biggest fund-raiser, which generated approximately $5,200 last year.
“It all goes back to the scholarship fund,” Tyson said. The club issues scholarships to students at Sebastian River High School every year – how much depends on the success of the club’s fund-raisers.
Sebastian Rotary Club President Chris Pinson said that he would like to see 10,000 people come to the park during the 2-day Home and Garden Show – whether they’ll reach that goal remains to be seen.
“It’s so hard because there are so many entrances,” Pinson said of calculating the number of visitors.
New this year to the event is a chance drawing for an all terrain vehicle.
“The Rotary Club really stepped it up a notch this year,” Pinson said of securing the ATV for the drawing.
Also, the club is holding door prize drawings every hour on the hour, giving away donated items from the various participating vendors.
This year’s sponsors include Re/Max Crown Realty, Spring Hill Suites and Sebastian River Medical Center, who Pinson said he wanted to thank for supporting the club.
The Home and Garden Show is held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Riverview Park in Sebastian. Admission is free, as is the entertainment and parking.
