VERO BEACH — In Shadow Country, prolific American writer Peter Matthiessen creates unforgettable characters living in the Florida wilderness of the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands at the turn of the 20th century. This classic novel will be the centerpiece of the Indian River County Historical Society’s second Book Social on Thursday, March 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Shadow Country is a reworking and condensation of a trilogy published in the 1990s – Killing Mr. Watson, Lost Man’s River, and Bone by Bone. It tells the story of Edgar J. Watson, a cane grower in extreme southwestern Florida with a violent and mysterious past. The novel explores his legendary exploits and turbulent personality through the perceptions of his family and neighbors.
Historical Society President Arlene Fletcher will review the book. Audience discussion will follow the presentation, and light refreshments will be served.
The social will take place at the Historical Society’s Hallstrom Homestead at 1723 Old Dixie Highway in Vero Beach. The requested donation for each of the book socials is $15 for Society members and $20 for non-members. Seating is limited to 25. The event is sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors, Jerry Cypert, First Vice President.
The social is part of a three-part series will benefit the Historical Society’s work in preserving the rich historical artifacts and materials at the Hallstrom House.
