Second Annual Day of Service coming up

VERO BEACH — Vero Beach Mayor Kevin Sawnick has named Saturday, April 24, as the official Second Annual Interfaith Day of Service, in a proclamation that applauds the linking of arms of religious and social service organizations to make a difference in the community.  Mayor Sawnick himself plans to be one of the active volunteers that day.

The Mayor noted that the Boys and Girls Club of Indian River County Youth Volunteer Corps will be joining volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Community Church of Vero Beach, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach and Unity Center of Vero Beach in the spirit of service.  More faith communities are expected to participate, as well as eleven other states in the Southeast region.

This year’s projects include something for everyone:  stuffing envelopes, yard work, cleaning, handyman repairs, building refurbishing, even building a greenhouse.  Based on last year’s involvement, more than 150 volunteers will work at Children’s Home Society, Sun Up (supporting adults with special needs); John W. Nick Foundation; Mental Health Association, the Samaritan Center Women´s Refuge, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, the Homeless Family Center, and others.  A different type of service will be blood donations for the  Indian River Blood Bank.

Volunteers will gather at the Indian River Mall at 8 a.m. on April 24 to receive assignments.  Those interested do not have to belong to any religious institution, and all are invited to register to work at www.ircdayofservice.org, indicating skills and/or physical limitations. The list of projects is listed on the website.

Breakfast and lunch, provided free to volunteers last year, will be provided again this year.
