INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is hoping 13 will be its lucky number as it seeks to place 13 hound mix puppies currently in its care. The puppies are 11 and 12 weeks of age and were recently surrendered by one Indian River County resident.

“We know there are wonderful homes awaiting these puppies,” said Janet Winikoff, of the Humane Society. According to the person who surrendered the puppies, two of her unsterilized female dogs produced litters within a week of each other.

“This situation highlights the importance of spaying and neutering,” said Winikoff. “People sometimes think they can wait to spay and neuter because their pets won’t get loose. This situation should be a wake up call to anyone out there with an unsterilized animal. It’s a glaring example of how accidents can happen – even two in a row.”

Prior to adoption, each puppy will be dewormed, receive all appropriate vaccinations, be spayed or neutered and microchipped.

For families seeking adult pets, the shelter has a variety of companion animals who are also available for adoption.

The shelter is located at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach and is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Prospective adopters can call (772) 388-3331 ext. 10 for more information.

The Humane Society emphasizes that it offers low-cost spay/neuter vouchers to all Indian County residents. Animal shelters and humane organizations in Palm Beach, Martin, Brevard and St. Lucie Counties also offer similar spay/neuter incentives.
