INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — County Commissioner Joe Flescher has filed to run for re-election to the District 2 seat, joining four others who have already filed with the Supervisor of Elections Office.
Flescher is the third Sebastian resident to run for the commission seat. Former Sebastian City Councilwomen Dale Simchick and Carolyn Corum are also in the running. Both women have already qualified for the race through collecting petition signatures. Vero Beach residents David Thomas Snell and Charlie Wilson have also thrown their names into the mix.
District 2 encompasses parts of northern Indian River County including some of Sebastian and the northern barrier island, up to and including the Town of Indian River Shores. It also spans parts of Gifford and the Grand Harbor area along Indian River Boulevard just north of Vero Beach.
While the district represents only a portion of the county, the seat is elected countywide.
Flescher is a retired police officer and has served one 4-year term on the Board of County Commissioners.
Simchick is a former member of the Sebastian City Council and an employee of the Indian River Sheriff’s Office.
Corum is a former Mayor of Sebastian who once ran for School Board. She is an avid environmentalist and currently works as a Realtor for Thorpe-Sotheby’s International Real Estate.
Snell is a longtime member of law enforcement who ran in 2004 for Sheriff in Indian River County.
Wilson served for about a month on the Vero Beach City Council before a Circuit Court judge ousted him for failing to meet the city’s residency requirements.
