Shirley Sterner Varner, 80, died Nov. 27, 2009, at Harbor Chase of Vero Beach. She was born in Hanover, Pa,. and lived in Okeechobee for 26 years, prior to living in Vero Beach for the past several years. She worked in management of women’s retail. She was the first female board member of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce and was on the board of Downtown Hanover Inc. She was a member of the Hanover Soroptimist Club, Ladies of Okeechobee Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Moose, of Okeechobee. Survivors include her son, Ashley B. Varner of Latrobe, Pa.; daughter, Pamela S. Varner of Vero Beach; brother, Herbert H. Sterner; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Varner.
