SEBASTIAN — Two officers were placed on paid administrative leave after fatally shooting a 41-year-old Sebastian man who came out of a residence carrying a shotgun late Thursday, police officials said. Details on if the man fired at officers or if he pointed the weapon at them were not immediately available. "There is no threat to the public at this time," said Tim Wood, interim police chief with the Sebastian Police Department. The man was identified by police as Keaton Daucher, who lived at the home with his mother, according to police. The names of the officers who fired their weapons were not released. The officers and the mother were not hurt, Wood said. Police K-9 units could be seen outside of the home Friday morning searching for evidence. "It's a tragic situation all around," Wood said. "You don't want to see your officers get in that type of situation. We don't want to inflict any type of harm on our citizens. At the end of the day, we want our officers to go home at night. Unfortunately, sometimes these things happen." The two officers responded to a noise complaint at 9:25 p.m. Thursday at the home in the 500 block of Joy Haven Drive, west of Barber Street and south of Sebastian Boulevard. The mother and son were the only people at the home. "Someone heard yelling coming from a residence," Wood said during a Friday news conference. The two officers spoke with the mother. A man's voice could be heard yelling from inside the residence. Wood said the man - identified as Daucher - came out of the home about 9:33 p.m. holding a shotgun. Both officers fired at Daucher. Details on how many shots were fired and if bullets from both officers' weapons struck Daucher were not immediately available. A third officer arrived at the home. Police attempted to revive Daucher. Daucher was pronounced dead at the scene, Wood said. It was unclear if the shotgun was loaded. The officers who fired their weapons were placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine for police-involved shootings. The case was turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Details on if body camera footage will be released were not available. Wood said police previously responded to the home, but further details were not immediately available. It was not immediately known if Daucher had a criminal record. Victim advocates spoke to the mother. Wood thanked the Sebastian officers along with Indian River County Sheriff's deputies, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office for assisting in the investigation. "I can't be more proud of how (Sebastian police) handled the situation last night," Wood said. "I would like to extend my condolences to the family of the deceased. It's a very difficult situation all around." Photos by Joshua Kodis [gallery ids="236331,236332,236333,236334"]
