On a weekend dominated by great football games on the high school, colligate, and professional level, the most famous athlete of all-time still managed to steal headlines. Five-time NBA MVP Michael Jordan was enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday along with fellow NBA greats John Stockton and David Robinson. While Michael Jordan’s acceptance speech continues to be talked (and blogged) about, the personal shortcomings which he showcased during it come as no surprise to people who really followed his epic career. Jordan’s manifesto was certainly newsworthy, but hey, this is football season!
Vero Beach High School pulled out a thrilling 4th quarter win over West Boca High School, and St. Edward’s lost a in the last few minutes after leading all game. VBHS looked lethargic during the first half, but came back to win with circus catch by WR Joe Garafalo. When the Fighting Indians decide to open up their offense, they really catch opponents sleeping. Ft. Pierce Westwood comes to the Citrus Bowl on Friday, and they bring a run and shoot version of the spread offense with them. It is unusual for them not to have four receivers on the field at any given time, and they have Pahokee-like speed.
St. Edward’s was leading a team that beat them by five touchdowns a year ago for the entire game, until . . . Shorecrest QB Tremaine Hunter broke free for a 64 yard TD run. Tremaine tortured St. Ed’s last year, and he got the best of them again this year. This was the first test the Pirates have really faced this year, and they played 3 1/2 quarters of great football. How they bounce back against Merritt Island Christian School this week will dictate what kind of success they will have for the rest of the year.
I’ll have more on these two matchups tomorrow, as well as another blog. Stay tuned!
