VERO BEACH — Volunteers were honored and officers installed at an Awards Luncheon sponsored by the Lakes at Pointe West and hosted by the Indian River Unit of the American Cancer Society.Honorees included cancer survivor Tracy Hinkle, the Courage Award for her positive outlook and motivation of others. Dr. William McGarry received the Hope Award, recognizing his volunteercontributions in a cancer control area, and the Oechsner Award, for distinguished leadership, inspiration and humane concern. Michelle Carter was honored with the Taylor Award for Outstanding New Volunteer, recognizing her leadership as chair of the successful 2009 Relay for Life of the Beaches. Terry Ann Higdon, the Special Appreciation Award for her work on the Look Good…Feel Better program. Dr. McGarry passed the gavel to Ruth Ann Fleckenstein who will serve as chairman. Nancy Madsen, area executive director introduced the new slate of officers, which includes Dr. Rob Callery, chair elect; Terry Ann Higdon, secretary; Wick Norwood, fiscal compliance advisor and Dr. Gregory MacKay, medical advisor.
