KICKOFF CLASSIC: Sebastian stuns Vero Beach on last-minute TD

SEBASTIAN – Stephon Clark grabbed a 9-yard TD pass from Wesley Wilson with 58 seconds left Friday night to give Sebastian River High School a 14-10 victory over Vero Beach before a capacity crowd of 5,000 at the fourth Kickoff Classic.

From the second quarter on, it was the Fred Macon show on display at Shark Stadium.  After gaining only 3 yards in the opening quarter, the running back went on to gain 155 yards on the ground.  Macon ran for 48 yards on the game-winning drive.  After dropping two key passes earlier, Clark redeemed himself by making the catch of the game for SRHS. “I was extremely proud of our team in the first half after they went down ten, they didn’t hang their heads,” said Sebastian Coach Randy Bethel.  “With some key penalties today, it took the wind out of our sails a little bit, but our kids showed character.”

The Indians got the ball back with 55 seconds in the game, and put together a drive that was cut short by Javon Jones, when he intercepted a Todd Fennell pass at the Sharks’ 5-yard-line.

“Both teams came out and played hard, but I think we got tired late,” said Vero Beach Coach Gary Coggin.  “The effort was there, and in spurts everybody executed well.  We did a few things we did out there that we probably wouldn’t do again, but both sides played fair and hard.”

“I think it was a fun night for everybody,” coach Coggin added.  “Their team came out on top and I have to give it to them.”
