VERO BEACH — Just after 1 p.m., at least two 911 calls came in regarding a structure fire with a large amount of smoke at 3030 18th Street. Firefighters from Stations 1, 2, 3 and 4 responded to the scene and a portion of 30th Avenue is closed off to traffic.According to reports on the police scanner, a family lives in the house, but Battalion Chief Dan Dietz called in on the radio that the house was “all clear” of occupants at 1:21 p.m. The billowing, black smoke could be seen by drivers crossing the Merrill Barber Bridge.Lt. Will Ramsey said crews fought the fire from two different directions with water lines, pushing the flames back toward the garage where it seemed to have started.”I don’t know how much we saved inside, but we did our best,” Ramsey said.
