Robert E. Zimmer, 88, of Vero Beach, died Monday, July 27, 2009, at the Indian River Estates Medical Center in Vero Beach. Mr. Zimmer was born June 8, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa., and moved to the Vero Beach area 25 years ago from Stone Harbor, N.J.
He flew torpedo bombers during World War II while serving in the US Navy. Mr. Zimmer was president of the Schoenhut Toy Company, which manufactured items such as toy pianos and the game “Pick-up Sticks.” He was a member of the American Legion in Stone Harbor and of the Lutheran faith. Survivors include his daughter, Susan Fullerton of Palm City; son, Robert E. Zimmer Jr., of Hanover, Mass.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Schoenhut Zimmer, his brother Henry Zimmer and his sister Mildred Root.
A life celebration will be held 1 p.m., Friday, July 31, at Indian River Estates and in Stone Harbor, N.J. at 3 p.m., Aug. 29, at The Lutheran Church of Our Savior at 93rd and 3rd Avenue.
