Vero Beach Rotary installs new board, officers

VERO BEACH — The Rotary Club of Vero Beach held a noon installation luncheon June 25 for its 2009-2010 officers and board of directors at Quail Valley River Club on A1A. District 6930 Assistant District Governor Arthur Hodge conducted the ceremonies.   Special Medals of Honor were presented to George Barkett, John Schumann Jr. and Warren Zeuch for their decades of membership and service to the club, which was founded in 1926.  Other awards were presented by outgoing President David Osgood to: Steve Lauer, Sergeant at Arms; Carol Palowich, Pianist; Mark Schumann, Program Chairman; Sam Baita, Newsletter and Public Relations; Richard Durr, Webmaster; Gordon Foster, Tech Support; Mark Salisbury, Weekly Meeting Preparation; Trish Scattergood,  Secretary and “the adhesive that holds the club together.”  Osgood received a Past-President pin and a gavel from 09-10 President William Pomeroy.The board and officers include: Director Greg Bertaux, Director Joe Palowich, President-Elect John Carroll, Director Rip Tosun, Director Nicholas Thomas, Vice-President Ronnie Hewett, President Bill Pomeroy, Secretary Trish Scattergood, Treasurer Reese Brackins and Director Kathryn Barton.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. Officers pull man from burning home; two treated for smoke inhalation

SEBASTIAN — An officer and a resident were hospitalized for smoke inhalation after the officer helped pull the man from a burning trailer home filled with smoke, Sebastian police and fire rescue crews said. The blaze ignited about 3 a.m. Saturday in the kitchen at the residence in the 300 block of Valencia Street, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. Upon arrival, police Sgt. Steve Marcinik saw heavy smoke coming from the back of the home, police Lieutenant Tim Wood said. A neighbor told Marcinik that resident Rodney Dyke was still inside.
