Recession survival workshop at Community Church Vero Beach

VERO BEACH — United Way of Indian River County in conjunction with Community Church of Vero today announced that they are bringing their popular series of Recession Survival Workshops to Vero Beach. The workshops are free and open to the public, snacks and childcare are provided. The Vero Beach workshop will be held Tuesday, July 14, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. at Community Church, 1901 23rd Street.  Materials, including the recently updated and revised “Recession Survival Guide” (published by the United Way) will be made available for free.  The workshops will cover a variety of cost-saving techniques including low cost food options and low cost medical assistance programs. In addition, information on over 40 area services will be highlighted. Speakers include: Lisa London, Community Outreach Director for the United Way, Page Woodward, Program Outreach Coordinator 2-1-1 of the Treasure Coast, Sue Rux, Director of Operations for the Mental Health Association, and Jeanne Butten from Access Florida. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." 11-year-old breaks into church, steals laptop on Christmas Day

GIFFORD — An 11-year-old who deputies said broke into a church and stole a laptop on Christmas Day, was detained. Deputies also arrested the boy's mother after saying she failed to report the boy as missing. The Gifford youth told deputies he stole the $700 laptop because "he wanted something to play with," reports show. Deputies said the juvenile was a runaway. An arrest report noted the incident took place at St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church, located just south of St. Peter's Academy. Both facilities have the same address at 4250 38th Avenue, Gifford. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th.
