Volunteers to help get Children’s Clothing Closet ready for back to school

VERO BEACH — Members of the Indian River Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will sort, organize and distribute children’s clothing to needy families from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday during their Summer Social Day of Play and Giving at Childcare Resources Children’s Clothing Closet at 1801 24th Street in downtown Vero Beach.

Last year local AFP members helped build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Childcare Resources maintains a children’s clothing closet so parents who can’t afford to purchase needed clothing for their children ages infant to 12 years may “shop” from the clothing closet free of charge. Childcare Resources Children’s Clothing Closet accepts donations of children’s clothing & shoes for ages infant to 12 years. Items must be clean and in good condition (no stains or tears).

Deputies: Teen tried to suffocate infant in parking lot

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 19-year-old Cocoa woman who made suicidal threats on social media was arrested after a deputy spotted her appearing to suffocate her 6-month-old in a parking lot, officials said. Deputies said Aniyah Thomas made threats on Facebook that indicated she was going to try and hurt herself and the infant. It was unclear who took custody of the child after Thomas' arrest. Thomas was ordered to not have any further contact with the infant during her first court appearance, records show. The child's condition was not immediately known. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Environmental specialists with the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County collected water samples at the beaches Monday and on Jan. 28.
