Summer in the City to be held July 31 in Downtown Vero Beach.

VERO BEACH — Main Street Vero Beach is hosting an extended hour street party themed, Downtown Friday’s Summer in the City, 3:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Friday July 31. The party moves north one block from the regular location and will be held along 14th Avenue in front of the Heritage Center. Children are invited to come in their swimsuits to play on the water slides from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Don’t forget to bring a towel to dry off.

Other activities include animals from Busch Wildlife, an Ice Cream Social, a Christmas in July Marketplace inside the Heritage Center and of course lots of food and live entertainment. The charity of the evening is Indian River NOW.

Slight dip for July beach attendance compared to last year

VERO BEACH — Beachgoers are hitting the shores this summer all while practicing social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. The city's three guarded beaches had a slight dip in attendance numbers in July compared to last year, according to a Vero Beach Lifeguard Association report. Last month, 86,095 people flocked to Jaycee Park Beach, Humiston Park Beach and South Beach Park, lifeguards said. This number is less than the 86,686 beachgoers who hit the sand in July 2019. In July of 2018, the city set an attendance record when the beaches had 93,000 visitors, lifeguards said. Santa visits students at GYAC

GIFFORD — In the days leading up to Christmas, the jolly Saint Nicholas cleared up his busy schedule of gift giving to make sure students at a youth center received presents on their wish list. Saint Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus, visited youth last Thursday afternoon at Gifford Youth Achievement Center. The man in the traditional red and white outfit with a white beard was GYAC staff member Lebon Nicholas, happily providing each student with a gift. The students sung Christmas carols inside the gymnasium and the youth orchestra performed classic holiday tunes.
