Literacy Services of Indian River County’s Board of Directors is delighted to announce the appointment of Shannon Maitland as its new Executive Director effective December 1. Shannon has been empowering families and facilitating literacy activities in IRC since 2015, most recently as a GED tutor, PEN facilitator, and community partner.
She has also had leadership roles in such nonprofits as the Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative, The Learning Alliance, Economic Opportunities Council of Indian River County, and ProLiteracy Worldwide. Throughout her career, Shannon has secured over $3 million dollars in grants and philanthropic awards for charitable organizations.
Shannon has been a tutor for more than 20 years, helping students from pre-k through graduate student level improve their English and math skills. She is a published author, Certified Success Principles Coach, and Certified Trauma & Resilience in Children Trainer. At Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Shannon earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and a Master of Public Administration degree. At FGCU, she served as an academic tutor, supplemental instructor, and graduate research assistant.
Shannon says, “I’ve always loved helping people learn. I enjoy inspiring curiosity and watching people grow in their life journeys. It is a true honor and dream come true to be part of the legacy of Literacy Services.”
Literacy Services of IRC (LSIRC) has been providing literacy tutoring to adults in Indian River County for over 50 years. LSIRC’s mission is to deliver comprehensive and innovative learning opportunities to local adults seeking English language and literacy skills to achieve their goals. A United Way supported agency, LSIRC relies on over 150 volunteer tutors who provide free, confidential and one to-one tutoring to individuals aged 16 and older. Literacy Services also offers group classes, virtual tutoring and workplace tutoring at the request of local employers. There are currently 36 students on the waitlist for tutoring. New tutors are always needed. Tutors do not need prior teaching experience and receive training and resources from Literacy Services.
The organization’s annual Love of Literacy Luncheon will take place on Friday, March 17th, at Quail Valley River Club. In addition to LSIRC student speakers, the author, Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop, will talk about her recently published memoir, “Daughter of Spies.”
