The recent Kiwanis Youth in Action Workday drew more than 100 teenaged volunteers who spread out throughout Indian River County to take part in numerous enhancement projects.

Kiwanis members and church leaders from St. Helen’s and Holy Cross Catholic churches and Community Church of Vero Beach worked alongside the teens, who had been sectioned into small pod groups to keep everyone safe.

At Shining Light Garden, volunteers helped with planting and gardening, and at the Environmental Learning Center they painted and did some landscape work. Others sprang into action at the Sebastian Inlet State Park and Marina, working on a variety of activities including beach cleanups, fence repair and painting, painting playground equipment and building picnic tables.

The Youth in Action program was initiated 25 years ago by Richard Schlitt and Al Sammartino, longtime members of the Kiwanis Club of Vero-Treasure Coast, to engage local teenagers in service to the community.
