Woman burned, several displaced after grease fire at apt complex

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A woman was burned and several residents were displaced after a grease fire from cooking inside an apartment Monday afternoon, fire rescue crews said.

The woman who was cooking suffered minor burns to her hands and was taken by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Dion said. Dion said eight other units had heavy water damage from sprinklers, causing its residents to be displaced.

Firefighters responded to the incident about 12:30 p.m. Monday at Pinnacle Grove Apartments, located in the 1800 block of Woodland Circle. The complex is off Indian River Boulevard, between 45th and 41st streets.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames at the second floor unit several minutes after arriving on scene, Dion said. The flames were contained to the kitchen and did not spread to any other units, Dion said.

The woman – the only person inside the apartment – was taken to the hospital. The woman’s apartment had heavy smoke and water damage, Dion said.

The fire caused sprinkler systems to activate in nearby units, leaving major water damage in the apartments, Dion said. Power was disconnected to the apartments for safety reasons, Dion said.

Pinnacle Grove has provided unused units as shelter for those displaced. Red Cross South Florida Region is also assisting the displaced find temporary housing.

Estimates in damages were not available.
