Deputy accidentally shoots himself in hand at Vero High

VERO BEACH — A sheriff’s deputy has non-life threatening injuries after shooting himself in the hand while trying to clear his weapon at a school campus, authorities said.

Supervisors, staff and students were not at the school during the incident, reports show. The name of the injured deputy has not been released.

The incident happened about 8 a.m. Friday at Vero Beach High School, 1707 16th Street. The deputy accidentally shot himself in the hand between his ring and middle fingers, authorities said.

Training was scheduled at the high school. Other deputies who were also on scene provided immediate first aid, applying a tourniquet and gauze until emergency medical services arrived.

The deputy was taken to the Indian River Medical Center for treatment. Other deputies recovered the projectile, which did not cause any damage to the school, authorities said.
