Winemaker of the Year showcases wines in Vero

A winemaker considered to be a legend in the industry presented five of his wines at an event Thursday night in Vero Beach, just two days before he will be presented with a Winemaker of the Year award.

Robert Rex and his wife PJ, both of whom own Deerfield Ranch Winery in California, talked about his wines at a wining and dining event from 6:30 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Vinz restaurant, 4855 State Road A1A. The high-end wines were served with four meals and a dessert, according to Vinz owner Zandra Simm.

Rex talked about each of the wines and how he makes them. Those wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Cuvee, Syrah, Red Rex and White Rex. The prices per bottle range from $30 to $43.

Attendees were able to purchase the wines and Rex signed the wine bottles, Simm said.

Prices for the RSVP private event were $100 per person.

After the event, Rex will attend the American Fine Wine Competition 11th Annual Charity Wine Gala from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at Pier 66 Hotel & Marina in Fort Lauderdale, officials said. Rex and Ernie Weir will receive “Winemaker of the Year” awards and Dr. Jan Krupp and Dave Pramuk will receive “Winery of the Year” awards.

More than 600 award-winning wines will be poured at the event, followed by a meal, auctions, music and celebrations. A portion of proceeds from the gala benefit the Autism Society of Florida.

Rex has worked as a winemaker for 46 consecutive years, according to officials. He teaches hands-on winemaking at Deerfield Ranch Winery and several of his students have started their own wineries.
