INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 42-year-old inmate died after he was found unresponsive in his cell and then taken to a hospital, authorities said.

Detectives think the man’s ongoing health issues played a role in is death. No signs of foul play or trauma are suspected at this time, said Sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers.

The inmate’s cellmate notified a corrections staff member early Wednesday at the county jail after he heard gurgling noises and saw the man unresponsive. Deputies immediately performed CPR and then took the man to the Indian River Medical Center.

Doctors pronounced the man dead about 10:55 a.m, deputies said. The man’s identity and more details about his death will be released after his family members are notified, Flowers said.
