United Nations recognizes World Habitat Day

VERO BEACH — World Habitat Day is designated each year by the United Nations as a time to reflect on the need for adequate shelter around the globe. This year, World Habitat Day is Monday, Oct, 3 and begins a month of special events among Habitat affiliates across the nation.

Indian River Habitat for Humanity will have a manned welcome/display and information area at its Home Center ReStore, at 4580 N. U.S. 1 in Vero Beach, during the week of Oct. 3.

The public is encouraged to stop by and learn a bit more about the ways Indian River Habitat reaches beyond its county borders to participate in Habitat builds and projects in other countries. The Home Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

In recognition of this year’s World Habitat Day, Habitat will dedicate its 500,000th house, on Maai Mahiu, Kenya, and raise the walls on its 500,001st house, in Paterson, NJ.

Since its start in 1991, the local affiliate has made it possible for more than 270 families to have simple, safe, decent homes, in Indian River County, and currently averages 30 homes per year, built or rehabbed.
