Inspired by Nature exhibit opens at Vero Beach Museum of Art

VERO BEACH — A new exhibit will be on display in the Stark Gallery at the Vero Beach Museum of Art through Jan. 8, 2012. Inspired by Nature: Celebrating the Beauty and Complexity of Trees, features arboreal forms in the work of Jennifer Steinkamp, James Balog, Charles Burchfield and others.

Steinkamp’s video installation, curiously entitled Fly to Mars 5 (2005), is a computer-generated video projection of a maple tree that cycles through four seasons-flowering in spring, leafing out in lush greenery in summer, morphing into the rusty reds of fall, and finally becoming bare in winter. Utilizing special software, Steinkamp reveals the playful possibilities in contemporary technology.

Balog’s Giant Sequoia was produced as part of his series depicting champion trees, painstakingly captured in nearly 500 separate frames as he rappelled down a neighboring tree. As he created his various images, Balog developed an intense appreciation for each magnificent specimen. Through the imaginative works of Steinkamp, Balog, and other contemporary artists, Museum visitors will see the trees in their own back yards with equally fresh eyes.

The Museum is located at 3001 Riverside Park Drive in Vero Beach and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 – 4:30 p.m.
