Treasure Coast Food Bank Receives $100,000 Grant from Walmart Foundation

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Treasure Coast Food Bank has received a $100,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to establish a Senior Health and Nutrition Outreach Initiative to provide nutritious meals to low-income senior citizens and their families.

The grant was awarded through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program, created to carry out the retailer’s commitment to giving back to the community in which it operates. This year, the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program awarded nearly $1 million in grants, and a portion of the money was allocated to charities combating hunger.

“Walmart has been and continues to be a fantastic partner to Treasure Coast Food Bank,” CEO Judy Cruz said. “In addition to the generous donations from the company, Treasure Coast Food Bank is fortunate to be able to have some wonderful volunteers from area Walmarts, including the Walmart Distribution Center in Fort Pierce.”

The Treasure Coast Food Bank program targets seniors who have found themselves having to make difficult choices between buying medicine or eating healthy meals, or making a car repair or buying nutritious food. The grant money will provide seniors will fresh vegetables and meats and weekly food boxes of nutritious food. The program will serve seniors in all four Treasure Coast Food Bank counties: Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee.

Treasure Coast Food Bank, through alliances with about 200 partner agencies, distributes more than 100,000 pounds of food each week across the Treasure Coast to hungry families and children. For more information on Treasure Coast Food Bank and its programs, visit stophunger.org.
