VERO BEACH — The VNA’s Hustle for Home Health & Hospice 3.5-mile walk/run will take place rain or shine on Saturday, November 20.  The race begins at 7:35 a.m. from the VNA building, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach.

This event is in celebration of the VNA’s 35th anniversary and in recognition of National Hospice and Home Care Month. All proceeds will benefit charitable home health and hospice care in our community.

Walkers are welcome, and restrooms will be available.

• Complimentary T-shirts awarded to the first 235 registrants.

• All registrants will receive a goodie bag.

• Medals will be awarded to all finishers.

• Age group winners will be announced and top over all male and female finisher will receive a prize.

Food, refreshments, and entertainment will follow the event.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings.
