SUMMARY:AAUW Book Review Breakfast: Can Anyone Live on the Minimum Wage?
DESCRIPTION:Millions of Americans work full time\, year-round\, for poverty-level wages. Welfare-reform rhetoric promises that a job—any job—can be the ticket to a better life. In 1998\, journalist Barbara Ehrenreich decided see if that was true. She left her home\, took the cheapest lodgings she could find\, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. \nNickel and Dimed is the result of her experience. On Monday\, Nov. 6\, Matt Tanner will review Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America\, as the local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) kicks off its 2023-24 season of monthly Book Review Breakfasts at 9:30am in the Richardson Center of the Vero Beach campus of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane. \nAs Executive Director of United Against Poverty (UP)\, Tanner is well-qualified to address whether Ehrenreich’s findings are true today\, 25 years later\, here in Indian River County\, where the minimum wage is now $12/hour and the cheapest one-bedroom apartment may be more than $1000/month. UP-Indian River County seeks to serve those in poverty by providing crisis care\, food/household subsidy\, employment training and placement\, and more. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:GYAC Red Carpet Tour
DESCRIPTION:GYAC will be hosting a ‘Red Carpet Tour’ on Tuesday\, November 14 at 4:00 p.m. Tours are the perfect opportunity for new and seasoned residents to fall in love with the Center’s mission: to create\, with God’s guidance\, educational\, cultural and social opportunities that enhance the lives of the youth and families we serve. \nApproximately 250 students in grades kindergarten through twelfth\, from across Indian River County\, are enrolled in GYAC’s educational afterschool program. Four days a week\, students receive homework assistance and\, if needed\, one-on-one tutoring. Weekly enrichment activities include lessons in the science explorers club\, youth employability skills\, gardening\, tennis\, cosmetology and much more. In addition\, students participate in several off-site cultural and social outings throughout the year. \nIn June\, GYAC’s enrollment balloons to nearly 300 students who attend the Center’s summer camp\, where educational instruction continues. Afternoons are filled with plenty of time for recreation\, including weekly trips to the pool\, bowling alley and skating rink. \nThat’s not all. As part of the Beyond Special K (BSK) program\, GYAC also hosts weekly exercise classes: low impact aerobics and qigong for adults and senior citizens. Plus\, a mobile food pantry and food delivery for nearby homebound seniors is offered twice a month. \nLearn more about GYAC during one of our famous ‘red carpet tours\,’ led by Freddie Woolfork\, GYAC’s Director of Public Relations and Facilities Operations. We invite you to enjoy refreshments\, followed by a Q&A session with the Center’s leadership team. \nSee firsthand why your neighbors support GYAC’s mission and what makes GYAC Indian River County’s ‘Miracle on 43rd Avenue.’ An RSVP is kindly requested. For more information or to RSVP\, please call 772.794.1005 or email pgibbs@mygyac.org.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science: Together We Make the World Better
DESCRIPTION:Community members can help make the world a better place by partnering with scientists in “Citizen Science” efforts. \nKerryanne Monahan\, Master Instructor and Professor of Biological Science at Indian River State College\, will explain the important role the Citizen Scientist can play right here in our unique Treasure Coast environment at a Speaker Luncheon sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, Vero Beach Chapter. The luncheon is 11:30am – 1pm at Regency Park\, 910 Regency Square\, Vero Beach. Cost is $25/person. Go to www.AAUWverobeach.org to register. \nMonahan is a National Geographic Fellow and has been a speaker for Ted Ed Talks. Not a problem. Don’t have a lot of time? Not a problem. Monahan offers numerous ways that ordinary community members of all ages and interests can help in some way — and when we all lend a hand\, our efforts can add up to making a big difference. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research.
