SUMMARY:Celebrating 60 years of Scholarships and Service
DESCRIPTION:As it marks 60 years of existence\, the Vero Beach branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, is proud to have provided thousands of dollars in scholarships for girls and women in Indian River County. And that’s just one of the group’s many efforts to promote education and opportunities for our local girls. \nFounded in 1964 by Lenore Feibel and Dorothy Forbes\, who served\, respectively\, as inaugural President and Vice President for Membership\, the organization began with 54 charter members who established a tradition of service that’s been upheld ever since. As one of the largest AAUW chapters in the state\, the local branch currently has over 100 members. \nBeginning with that 1964 inception\, the mission of AAUW-Vero Beach has been to provide scholarships and offer programs to empower women and girls in Indian River County. Some of its efforts have become local institutions: A children’s theater group started by AAUW became the Riverside Children’s Theater. The Senior Expo that connects senior citizens with organizations — created by AAUW in 2019 — grew so rapidly (despite being interrupted by COVID) that it was eventually handed off to the Senior Collaborative. Members of the local AAUW branch volunteer in numerous ways\, including as mentors for college-bound girls\, and tutoring children and adults through Literacy Services; members also have been involved in STEM programs such as the local Science Fair and Tech Trek. And the local branch helped the Treasure Coast Girls Coalition secure its first national grant from the AAUW-National organization in Washington\, D.C.\, in 2022. \nFor the community\, the AAUW-VB offers five Book Review Breakfasts each year\, which are free and open to the public\, featuring local experts discussing a book of current interest. The monthly speaker series from October to April features experts on a variety of topics. Recent topics have included issues surrounding gun violence\, how citizens can help advance science research\, mental health issues\, women in leadership on corporate boards\, and the influence of culture on girls’ self-perception. \nIn addition\, the AAUW-VB sponsored Book-Author Luncheons for many years\, featuring such authors as Debbie Macomber\, Charles Todd\, Lisa Unger\, Mary Alice Monroe\, and more. \nThe core purpose of the organization\, however\, has always been empowering women and girls by way of education. The types of financial assistance have grown with the times. For years\, we provided scholarships annually to women who had completed their associate degree at IRSC and were moving on toward a bachelor’s degree—totaling about $35\,000 since 2013. \nMore recently\, in 2019 the branch began providing EOC stipends of $2000 each to women pursuing their LPN degree through IRSC’s accelerated program\, and in 2022 the branch began awarding scholarships of $1000 each to young women graduating from a local high school and going on to college. About $30\,000 has been distributed through these two programs alone. \nAAUW-Vero Beach fundraisers are the primary source\, supported by the generosity of members\, for the scholarship funds. This year\, the branch is hosting two fundraisers: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (followed by a Royal Afternoon Tea)\, starring Sheryl Faye as the Queen (March 3\, Emerson Center)\, and a Mah Jongg “Play the New Card” event (April 12\, Bent Pine). More information is available on the website\, AAUWverobeach.org. \nPast members\, current members\, and guests are invited to join in the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the AAUW-Vero Beach at 11:15am Saturday\, Feb. 17\, at the Vero Beach Country Club. Cost is $35. Go to the website AAUWverobeach.org to register.

SUMMARY:Meet ‘Queen Elizabeth’ at the Emerson Center
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 3\, in the Emerson Center\, actress Sheryl Faye will present “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\,” a multimedia performance giving us a peek into the life of this amazing woman whose life embodied courage\, resilience and dedication to service. Sponsored by the American Association of University Women\, the performance begins at 2pm. Tickets\, at $40 each\, are available online from AAUWverobeach.org. \nDuring her 70-year reign\, Elizabeth II became an icon not only in the United Kingdom but around the world: She ruled the longest of any British monarch. In a world of constant change\, she was a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Britons\, including many who have never known their country without her. \nEnjoy a Royal Afternoon Tea\nAfter being immersed in the life of the Queen\, you can enjoy a Royal Afternoon Tea\, also at the Emerson Center\, immediately following the performance. A limited number of tickets to both the play and the tea\, at $60 each\, are available on the website AAUWverobeach.org. \nElizabeth Alexandra Mary didn’t expect to be a queen; even after her uncle\, Edward VIII\, abdicated\, she was perfectly content to continue as a princess\, while her father\, King George VI ruled. Even as a princess\, however\, her sense of responsibility was strong: At age 14\, young “Lilibet” was on the radio\, encouraging British children who had been evacuated from their London homes during the dark days of the London blitz and World War II. Five years later\, in 1945\, she trained as a driver and mechanic for the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Upon her father’s death in 1952\, she was thrust at age 25 into a role she never sought — monarch of the United Kingdom. \nHer Majesty is portrayed by Sheryl Faye\, a professional actress whose portrayals include Anne Frank\, Sally Ride\, Susan B. Anthony\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, Helen Keller\, Amelia Earhart\, Abigail Adams\, Eleanor Roosevelt\, Clara Barton\, Laura Ingalls Wilder. \nA graduate of Emerson College\, Faye credits her decision to include Queen Elizabeth II in her repertoire to her mother\, a longtime Anglophile. “One of the highlights of her life was when we both got to attend the Opening of Parliament in London. My Mother and I actually got to see the event from inside Parliament in The Lord’s apartment. We walked out on the balcony as the Queen pulled up in her carriage\,” says Faye. \nThe Vero Beach AAUW is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Proceeds go toward educational scholarships\, grants and stipends for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:What Is the Color of Beauty?
DESCRIPTION:Carolyn Nelson\, Executive Director\, Friends After Diagnosis in Vero Beach\, will consider that question when she reviews The Bluest Eye\, by Toni Morrison\, at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women). The breakfast is 9:30-11am on Monday\, March 4\, in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane\, Vero Beach. \nThe Bluest Eye is a powerful examination of our obsession with beauty and conformity that asks questions about race\, class\, and gender with subtlety and grace. \nIn Toni Morrison’s acclaimed novel\, Pecola Breedlove — an 11-year-old Black girl in an America whose love for its blond\, blue-eyed children can devastate all others — prays for her eyes to turn blue. Why? So that she will be beautiful\, so that people will look at her\, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning\, and the tragedy of its fulfillment. \nCarolyn Nelson is Executive Director of Friends After Diagnosis\, a 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of women diagnosed with cancer. “Friends” offers support groups\, wellness programs\, personal services\, events\, and networking to help survivors feel connected and secure in a community that truly cares. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.
