SUMMARY:Waldo's Secret Art Walk
DESCRIPTION:“Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is a tribute to Waldo Sexton whose family and homestead is hosting this special art event this month on December 16th and 17th. Although you can experience Waldo’s found art throughout all of his local landmarks like the Ocean Grill and the Driftwood Inn\, the artist’s home is a treasure trove of his eclectic style. Waldo Sexton would have loved this art show on his homestead with artists lining pathways and tucked under shaded patios. Every turn in the path through the lush jungle garden reveals a new surprise placed with purpose by the artist. Spanish tile\, ornate iron gates\, a lantern\, a bell or a bronze statue calls out to the artist in all of us. Visitors will enjoy the work of thirty local artisans creating works in sculpture\, jewelry\, painting\, furniture\, fabric\, glass and metal. Events during the two days will feature readings by Sean Sexton from his new book “Portals”\, salsa dance performances\, classical guitar and more. There will also be gourmet food available from Dolly’s Table and a selection of craft beer from Sailfish Brewery. “Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is open from 11am to 5pm\, Saturday and Sunday\, December 16-17. SUMMARY:AAUW Book Review Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Education of an Unintentional Racist \nIf you’re born into a community and cultural environment that’s “like a stroll through the Norman Rockwell Museum\,” how do you learn to relate to a more diverse world? \nCarol Ludwig\, Executive Director of the Center for Spiritual Care in Vero Beach\, will consider that question as she reviews “Waking Up White: and Finding Myself in the Story of Race\,” by Debbie Irving at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women). The breakfast is 9:30-11:30am on Monday\, Jan. 8\, in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane\, Vero Beach. \nWaking Up White is the book Irving wishes someone had handed her decades ago. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions\, she offers a fresh perspective on bias\, stereotypes\, manners\, and tolerance. As Irving unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness\, being a good person\, and wanting to help people of color\, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race. She also explains why and how she’s changed the way she talks about racism\, works in racially mixed groups\, and understands the antiracism movement as a whole. \nCarol Ludwig\, spiritual director\, supervisor\, teacher and retreat leader\, presents widely in the U.S. and overseas. Carol was formed in the contemplative-evocative style of spiritual direction through the Washington Theological Union\, the Shalem Institute and Mercy Center. Carol has served on the faculties of Audire\, Loyola (New Orleans) University\, Mercy Center\, Sacred Heart University and the Shalem Institute. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:Friends of St. Sebastian River Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Joann McGrath is a massage therapist by professional\, and a nature lover by passion. Animal rescue is part of that passion\, having adopted special-needs dogs over the past 20 years. That passion has continued throughout her life\, leading to her desire to protect gopher tortoises\, and to start the Gopher Tortoise Alliance in 2023. Their members have a variety of wildlife expertise\, and all are passionate about protecting the tortoise\, its eggs\, burrows\, and habitat. Gopher tortoises are a keystone species and listed as “threatened” in Florida. They are a “commensal” reptile in that their burrows are shared by more than 350 other species\, some of which are threatened themselves. \nJoin the Friends of St. Sebastian River on Tuesday\, January 23\, 6pm at the North Indian River County Library\, 1001 Sebastian Blvd. for Joann’s discussion of the gopher tortoise\, its history\, habitat\, food\, and challenges it faces here in Indian River County. Our meeting is free\, and everyone is welcome to attend. For more information\, visit our website at www.fssr.org or call 772-202-0501. For more information about the Gopher Tortoise Alliance\, visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/tortoiseteamirc.

DESCRIPTION:The Librarian of Burned Books has been called “a novel that should be read by anyone and everyone who cares about books in a day and age where books and their subject matter are once again being challenged by school boards and parents throughout the country.” \nInspired by the true story of the Council of Books in Wartime — the WWII organization founded by booksellers\, publishers\, librarians\, and authors to use books as “weapons in the war of ideas” — The Librarian of Burned Books is an unforgettable historical novel\, a haunting love story\, and a testament to the beauty\, power\, and goodness of the written word. \nLenora Ritchie\, Vice President\, Carter Global Consulting\, will review The Librarian of Burned Books\, by Brianna Labuskes\, at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women). The breakfast is 9:30-11:30am on Monday\, Feb. 5\, in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane\, Vero Beach. \nLenora Ritchie is an accredited communicator and fundraising professional with 30 years of experience in public relations\, fund development and foundation management. Lenora’s focus at Carter is on philanthropic strategy\, board development and governance\, and organizational planning. Carter Global Consultants Carter consultants work to advance philanthropy worldwide by counseling nonprofit organizations in the areas of fundraising\, organizational planning\, and governance. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged.
