SUMMARY:AAUW to Sponsor a Forum on Women’s Economic Security
DESCRIPTION:Women’s economic security is a significant issue for our time\, on many levels\, including educational opportunities\, job and salary negotiation\, balancing family and professional demands — and the financial impact of the choices we make from the options available to us. \nOn Saturday\, Jan. 18\, the Vero Beach branch of the AAUW will present LEVEL UP\, a Forum on Economic Security\, featuring Mary Gatta\, Director of Research and Public Policy for the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and Co-Public Policy Director for AAUW Florida. The forum is in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane\, Vero Beach\, from 11am to 2pm. Cost is $25. Register and pay online at AAUWverobeach.org. Reservation deadline is Jan. 13. \nConsideration of women’s economic security is of particular concern in our state: According to the Employment and Earnings Index\, compiled by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research in Washington\, D.C.\, Florida earned a pathetic D+ rating for female employment and earnings. Come and learn more about how to help improve women’s economic security in Florida. \nMary’s talk will be followed by informational mini-presentations by four local financial planning professionals\, then lunch\, then table groups conducted by these four professionals. \nPanelists:\n• Pamela Hennig of Conforti & Hennig\, Elder Law Attorney\n• Marc Herndon and Michael Bristol\, Autobahn Communications\, Technology Solutions\n• Joanne Sardella of Raymond James Financial Services \nA woman’s economic security in retirement is hugely affected by decisions made during her working years\, so this presentation is important to Gen-X and Millennial women as well. And — retired women need to keep themselves informed about their families’ economic situation\, too: Relying on a husband or partner or even a son or daughter to do it for you may be a recipe for financial disaster. The panelists will offer their expertise on how you can make sure you’re in the know. \nAAUW is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. All funds raised through any activity go toward scholarships\, grants and stipends for girls and women in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:VBMA Exhibition - Well-Dressed: Artworks from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Well-Dressed: Artworks from the Permanent Collection\nFebruary 10–September 14\, 2025\nSchumann Gallery and Titelman Gallery \nWell-Dressed: Artworks from the Permanent Collection explores the intersection of fashion\, identity\, performance\, and self-expression. The show is VBMA’s first major thematic permanent collection exhibition in recent years and brings together dozens of artworks\, some familiar and others rarely on display. \nWell-Dressed begins with portraits of individuals in various kinds of dress\, often wearing colorful garments. Some clothing items\, like the yellow dress in Joseph Stella’s painting Joy of Living\, starkly contrast with their surroundings\, while others\, such as the photograph\, Punzante by Argentinian artists Raúl Eduardo Stolkiner (known as RES) and Constanza Piaggio\, emphasize pattern and materiality\, presenting a woman adorned in a stole made entirely of wire. \nA section of the exhibition examines the concept of “collective dress\,” highlighting works that portray groups of individuals wearing similar or identical outfits or uniforms. Another section focuses on the attire of dancers\, performers\, musicians\, and actors. The final section showcases artworks that depict only clothing or accessories; pieces such as Michael Craig-Martin’s Untitled (Sunglasses) and Karen LaMonte’s Reclining Dress Absence. These function almost as surrogate portraits\, allowing viewers to imagine whom they might represent. \nThe exhibition is organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art. \nIMAGE CAPTION: Karen LaMonte\, Reclining Dress Absence\, 2005. SUMMARY:VBMA Exhibition - Timeless: Robert Farber’s Fashion Photography
DESCRIPTION:Timeless: Robert Farber’s Fashion Photography\nFebruary 10–August 31\, 2025\nStark Gallery \nVero Beach Museum of Art is pleased to present Timeless: Robert Farber’s Fashion Photography on view in the Stark Gallery from February 10 through August 31\, 2025. Farber (b. 1944) has lived and traveled the world as a leading force in the world of photography. \nRobert Farber’s professional practice spans commercial and fine art photography\, with subject matter ranging from fashion and portraits to still life and landscapes. The works featured in Timeless are drawn from two major bodies of work: his Vintage Fashion series\, captured during commercial shoots\, and the Deterioration series\, which consists of prints from his earlier fashion photography. These prints\, created from film that became vulnerable to heat\, humidity\, and other elements over the years\, reveal colorful and otherworldly distortions. These effects are entirely natural and reveal the beauty in the unexpected transformations of the film over time. \nTimeless brings both series together for the first time in a museum exhibition. \nThis exhibition is organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art. \nIMAGE CAPTION: Robert Farber\, Deterioration #155\, (detail) 1982/2017. SUMMARY:Vero Beach Opera Presents La Bohème and Puccini—The Search for a Libretto
DESCRIPTION:In his talk\, Vero Beach Opera Master of Ceremonies Ian Campbell shows how Puccini and his librettists created an opera by sifting through Henry Murger’s Scènes de la vie de Bohème\, which chronicles the adventures of four Bohemians as they struggle to survive in 1840s Paris. With musical examples showing the beauty of this opera and how Puccini even incorporated music from his student days to marvelous effect\, the search for a libretto will hold more than a few surprises\, even for those who know the opera well. \nRegistration is required. $20 per VBMA and Vero Beach Opera member; $25 per nonmember (includes museum admission)
