SUMMARY:Inspirational Book Review Breakfast Considers How to be Brave
DESCRIPTION:“The courage to be brave when it matters most requires a lifetime of small decisions that set us on a path of self-awareness\, attentiveness\, and willingness to risk failure for what we believe is right. … I want to expand our notion of what constitutes a decisive moment\, for they come in many forms\,” says Mariann Edgar Budde\, author of “How we Learn to Be Brave\,” and the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington\, D.C. \nCarol Ludwig\, Executive Director of the Vero Beach Center for Spiritual Care\, will review this inspirational work at a Book Review Breakfast at 9:30am on Monday\, January 5\, in the Richardson Center of the Indian River State College campus in Vero Beach. The event\, which begins with breakfast snacks\, is sponsored by the Vero Beach chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). \n“How We Learn to Be Brave” is a guide to the key junctures in life that\, if navigated with faith and discernment\, pave the way for us to become our most courageous selves. \nCarol Ludwig was formed in the contemplative-evocative style of spiritual direction through the Washington Theological Union\, the Shalem Institute and Mercy Center. Carol has served on the faculties of Audire\, Loyola (New Orleans) University\, Mercy Center\, Sacred Heart University and the Shalem Institute. \nYou do not need to have read the book in order to enjoy the Book Review Breakfast. All Book Review Breakfasts are free and open to the public. You are encouraged to bring new or gently used children’s books to help stock the four Little Free Libraries that we support around the community. AAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

SUMMARY:Indian River Land Trust — “Beyond the Centennial”
DESCRIPTION:Indian River — it’s our county\, it’s our special stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway\, it’s the land we enjoy and admire every day. Keeping it clean and beautiful and accessible to all is the mission of the Indian River Land Trust. \nKenneth Grudens\, Executive Director\, and Melissa DePriest\, Chief Development Officer of the Indian River Land Trust will discuss the mission and significance of the Trust at a Speaker Luncheon at 11:30am Saturday\, January 17. Sponsored by the Vero Beach branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, the luncheon is at Westminster Presbyterian Church\, 2555 58th Ave.\, Vero Beach. Cost is $25; go to AAUWverobeach.org for tickets. Registration deadline: Jan. 12. \nIn 2025 we celebrated the Centennial of Indian River County. One of the most prominent aspects of Indian River County is in its very name: Indian River. The Indian River Land Trust was formed in 1990 to protect that land that protects the Indian River Lagoon. The Land Trust promotes the conservation of the Lagoon for the residents of Indian River County by preserving habitat\, protecting scenic waterfront and providing access for the public. Their work today stretches to the four corners of Indian River County. \nKenneth Grudens has been with the Trust since 2004\, working to develop and implement a variety of programs that protect and conserve the natural resources and special places of Indian River County. \nMelissa DePriest is a lifelong Florida resident with a deep-rooted passion for protecting the natural beauty of her home state. She oversees IRLT’s philanthropy and donor relations\, guiding strategic development efforts and cultivating meaningful community partnerships. \nAs the old song says\, “This land is your land; this land is our land.” Don’t miss this chance to learn how IRLT inspires and engages the community to protect and restore the health of the Indian River Lagoon\, recognizing how critical the estuary is to the area’s economic vitality and quality of life. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. All funds raised go toward scholarships for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:Peek Into the World ‘Below the Edge of Darkness’
DESCRIPTION:Beneath the ocean waves just offshore is an amazing world that few are privileged to witness. \nYou can get a look into this unseen world At a Book Review Breakfast at 9:30am on Monday\, February 2\, featuring Dr. Edith Widder—world-renowned deep-sea explorer\, bioluminescence expert\, and CEO and Senior Scientist of the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA)\, which she co-founded in 2005. Based in Vero Beach\, ORCA uses cutting-edge applied science to identify pollution problems and help restore the health of Florida’s Indian River Lagoon. Sponsored by the Vero Beach Branch of the American Association of University Women\, the free Book Review Breakfast is in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College in Vero Beach. \nDr. Widder will discuss her book\, Below the Edge of Darkness\, a memoir hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “a thrilling blend of hard science and high adventure.” With her remarkable combination of scientific expertise and captivating storytelling\, Dr. Widder will illuminate the wonders of the deep sea — and the urgent need to protect our coastal waters. \nBelow the Edge of Darkness takes readers deep into our planet’s oceans as Widder pursues her questions about one of the most important and widely used forms of communication in nature. In the process\, she reveals hidden worlds and a dazzling menagerie of behaviors and animals\, from microbes to leviathans\, many never before seen or\, like the legendary giant squid\, never before filmed in their deep-sea lairs. Alongside Widder\, we experience life-and-death equipment malfunctions and witness breakthroughs in technology and understanding\, all set against a growing awareness of the deteriorating health of our largest and least understood ecosystem. \nAll Book Review Breakfasts are free and open to the public. You do not need to have read the book in order to enjoy the Book Review Breakfast. You are encouraged to bring new or gently used children’s books to help stock the four Little Free Libraries that we support around the community. AAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization.
