SUMMARY:Non-partisan Panel to Consider ‘How to Cope with Gun Violence’

SUMMARY:FREE WOMEN’S HEALTH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AT THE EMERSON CENTER
DESCRIPTION:VERO BEACH\, FL: Healthcare in the United States continues to advance\, but women in Florida still experience barriers to basic healthcare treatment and services.\nOn June 24\, 2022\, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization\, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned 50 years of precedent\, overruling Roe v. Wade. The judgement took away the constitutional right to abortion\, and paved the way for states to ban abortion care.\nThis ruling ignited small groups across the state of Florida to take action. Locally\, concerned citizens associated with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach launched the Initiative for Reproductive Justice (IRJ)\, a group that advocates for women’s healthcare rights. The IRJ focuses on three areas of women health advocacy: representation\, education and resources.\nThe IRJ educational arm is pleased to offer Focus on Women’s Health: Education and Empowerment\, an educational program for women’s healthcare rights and services. Focus on Women’s Health will be held on Saturday\, October 14\, 2023\, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Emerson Center located at 1590 27th Avenue\, Vero Beach\, Florida.\nFocus on Women’s Health is FREE and open to the public; no registration or reservations required. This community collaboration will feature medical and public policy experts who will present topics on reproductive health\, maternal and infant care\, women’s lifespan health issues (STD’s\, heart health\, gynecologic cancers\, menopause)\, and behavioral health. “There are resources and services available to women who need them\, and we want to help bring awareness of these services to our community\,” explained Hester Bloom\, member of the IRJ steering committee. If you or someone you know can benefit from women’s health services in Indian River County\, please mark your calendar for this FREE educational program! \nABOUT THE EMERSON CENTER\nThe Emerson Center’s mission is to provide educational\, enlightening and thought-provoking programs\, and memorable music events for our community. SUMMARY:AAUW Book Review Breakfast: Can Anyone Live on the Minimum Wage?
DESCRIPTION:Millions of Americans work full time\, year-round\, for poverty-level wages. Welfare-reform rhetoric promises that a job—any job—can be the ticket to a better life. In 1998\, journalist Barbara Ehrenreich decided see if that was true. She left her home\, took the cheapest lodgings she could find\, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. \nNickel and Dimed is the result of her experience. On Monday\, Nov. 6\, Matt Tanner will review Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America\, as the local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) kicks off its 2023-24 season of monthly Book Review Breakfasts at 9:30am in the Richardson Center of the Vero Beach campus of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane. \nAs Executive Director of United Against Poverty (UP)\, Tanner is well-qualified to address whether Ehrenreich’s findings are true today\, 25 years later\, here in Indian River County\, where the minimum wage is now $12/hour and the cheapest one-bedroom apartment may be more than $1000/month. UP-Indian River County seeks to serve those in poverty by providing crisis care\, food/household subsidy\, employment training and placement\, and more. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.
