SUMMARY:AAUW Book Review Breakfast: Can Anyone Live on the Minimum Wage?
DESCRIPTION:Millions of Americans work full time\, year-round\, for poverty-level wages. Welfare-reform rhetoric promises that a job—any job—can be the ticket to a better life. In 1998\, journalist Barbara Ehrenreich decided see if that was true. She left her home\, took the cheapest lodgings she could find\, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. \nNickel and Dimed is the result of her experience. On Monday\, Nov. 6\, Matt Tanner will review Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America\, as the local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) kicks off its 2023-24 season of monthly Book Review Breakfasts at 9:30am in the Richardson Center of the Vero Beach campus of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane. \nAs Executive Director of United Against Poverty (UP)\, Tanner is well-qualified to address whether Ehrenreich’s findings are true today\, 25 years later\, here in Indian River County\, where the minimum wage is now $12/hour and the cheapest one-bedroom apartment may be more than $1000/month. UP-Indian River County seeks to serve those in poverty by providing crisis care\, food/household subsidy\, employment training and placement\, and more. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:AAUW-Vero Beach Presents: Your Brain on Water (Spoiler Alert: It’s Good!)
DESCRIPTION:People love to walk on the beach\, or the boardwalk. Inland\, we often seek out a river or a lake. Many of us pay a premium to buy a home with a water view. Believe it or not\, there’s actually a scientific reason why we gravitate toward water\, and you can learn about it at the AAUW-Vero Beach’s Book Review Breakfast at 9:30am Monday\, Dec. 4\, in the Richardson Center of the Vero Beach campus of Indian River State College. Kendra Cope Bergman\, Executive Director\, Coastal Connections\, will review “Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near\, In\, On\, or Under Water Can Make You Happier\, Healthier\, More Connected\, and Better at What You Do\,” by Wallace J. Nichols. \nCombining cutting-edge neuroscience with compelling personal stories from top athletes\, leading scientists\, military veterans\, and gifted artists\, in “Blue Mind\,” author Wallace Nichols shows how proximity to water can improve performance\, increase calm\, diminish anxiety\, and increase professional success. “Nichols draws on science and art\, hard data and anecdote\, and plenty of experience\, to explain our blue mind in detail. Not just what it is\, but how we can enter into this state and — perhaps most important — why we should do so\,” said a Washington Post review of “Blue Mind.” \nAs Founder and Executive Director of Coastal Connections\, Kendra Cope Bergman puts a local perspective on Nichols’ research. Coastal Connections’ mission is to protect coastal habitats for sea turtle survival by educating and connecting people to the environment. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community.\nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:Waldo's Secret Art Walk
DESCRIPTION:“Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is a tribute to Waldo Sexton whose family and homestead is hosting this special art event this month on December 16th and 17th. Although you can experience Waldo’s found art throughout all of his local landmarks like the Ocean Grill and the Driftwood Inn\, the artist’s home is a treasure trove of his eclectic style. Waldo Sexton would have loved this art show on his homestead with artists lining pathways and tucked under shaded patios. Every turn in the path through the lush jungle garden reveals a new surprise placed with purpose by the artist. Spanish tile\, ornate iron gates\, a lantern\, a bell or a bronze statue calls out to the artist in all of us. Visitors will enjoy the work of thirty local artisans creating works in sculpture\, jewelry\, painting\, furniture\, fabric\, glass and metal. Events during the two days will feature readings by Sean Sexton from his new book “Portals”\, salsa dance performances\, classical guitar and more. There will also be gourmet food available from Dolly’s Table and a selection of craft beer from Sailfish Brewery. “Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is open from 11am to 5pm\, Saturday and Sunday\, December 16-17. SUMMARY:Clarence Palmer "Love Inside of Jazz"
DESCRIPTION:To quote master Hammond B-3 jazz organist\, pianist and vocalist\, Clarence Palmer\, “Love is the soul of jazz” and his song choices for his TCJAZZ presentation will reflect that theme. After initially learning gospel piano\, Gary Palmer switched to a Jimmy Smith inspired jazz organ in the 1960’s when it was gaining in popularity. Palmer appeared frequently as a sideman with various recording artists in 1960s and 1970s\, chiefly George Benson\, and Fats Theus. Today he presents various ensembles under his own leadership.\nLunch is served at 11:30 and is included in the price of $65. Concert is at 12:30\nat Oak Harbor

SUMMARY:Books as Weapons in ‘War of Ideas’
DESCRIPTION:The Librarian of Burned Books has been called “a novel that should be read by anyone and everyone who cares about books in a day and age where books and their subject matter are once again being challenged by school boards and parents throughout the country.” \nInspired by the true story of the Council of Books in Wartime — the WWII organization founded by booksellers\, publishers\, librarians\, and authors to use books as “weapons in the war of ideas” — The Librarian of Burned Books is an unforgettable historical novel\, a haunting love story\, and a testament to the beauty\, power\, and goodness of the written word. \nLenora Ritchie\, Vice President\, Carter Global Consulting\, will review The Librarian of Burned Books\, by Brianna Labuskes\, at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women). The breakfast is 9:30-11:30am on Monday\, Feb. 5\, in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane\, Vero Beach. \nLenora Ritchie is an accredited communicator and fundraising professional with 30 years of experience in public relations\, fund development and foundation management. Her work as a consultant is grounded in a career spent on both sides of the philanthropic fence — fundraising and grant-making. Lenora’s focus at Carter is on philanthropic strategy\, board development and governance\, and organizational planning. Carter Global Consultants Carter consultants work to advance philanthropy worldwide by counseling nonprofit organizations in the areas of fundraising\, organizational planning\, and governance.

SUMMARY:Meet ‘Queen Elizabeth’ at the Emerson Center
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 3\, in the Emerson Center\, actress Sheryl Faye will present “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\,” a multimedia performance giving us a peek into the life of this amazing woman whose life embodied courage\, resilience and dedication to service. Sponsored by the American Association of University Women\, the performance begins at 2pm. Tickets\, at $40 each\, are available online from AAUWverobeach.org. \nDuring her 70-year reign\, Elizabeth II became an icon not only in the United Kingdom but around the world: She ruled the longest of any British monarch. In a world of constant change\, she was a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Britons\, including many who have never known their country without her. \nEnjoy a Royal Afternoon Tea\nAfter being immersed in the life of the Queen\, you can enjoy a Royal Afternoon Tea\, also at the Emerson Center\, immediately following the performance. A limited number of tickets to both the play and the tea\, at $60 each\, are available on the website AAUWverobeach.org. \nElizabeth Alexandra Mary didn’t expect to be a queen; even after her uncle\, Edward VIII\, abdicated\, she was perfectly content to continue as a princess\, while her father\, King George VI ruled. Even as a princess\, however\, her sense of responsibility was strong: At age 14\, young “Lilibet” was on the radio\, encouraging British children who had been evacuated from their London homes during the dark days of the London blitz and World War II. Five years later\, in 1945\, she trained as a driver and mechanic for the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Upon her father’s death in 1952\, she was thrust at age 25 into a role she never sought — monarch of the United Kingdom. \nHer Majesty is portrayed by Sheryl Faye\, a professional actress whose portrayals include Anne Frank\, Sally Ride\, Susan B. Anthony\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, Helen Keller\, Amelia Earhart\, Abigail Adams\, Eleanor Roosevelt\, Clara Barton\, Laura Ingalls Wilder. \nA graduate of Emerson College\, Faye credits her decision to include Queen Elizabeth II in her repertoire to her mother\, a longtime Anglophile. “One of the highlights of her life was when we both got to attend the Opening of Parliament in London. My Mother and I actually got to see the event from inside Parliament in The Lord’s apartment. We walked out on the balcony as the Queen pulled up in her carriage\,” says Faye. \nThe Vero Beach AAUW is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Proceeds go toward educational scholarships\, grants and stipends for women and girls in Indian River County.
