SUMMARY:Citizen Science: Together We Make the World Better
DESCRIPTION:Community members can help make the world a better place by partnering with scientists in “Citizen Science” efforts. \nKerryanne Monahan\, Master Instructor and Professor of Biological Science at Indian River State College\, will explain the important role the Citizen Scientist can play right here in our unique Treasure Coast environment at a Speaker Luncheon sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, Vero Beach Chapter. The luncheon is 11:30am – 1pm at Regency Park\, 910 Regency Square\, Vero Beach. Cost is $25/person. Go to www.AAUWverobeach.org to register. \nMonahan is a National Geographic Fellow and has been a speaker for Ted Ed Talks. She also has helped design an Education Guide to accompany an inspiring documentary\, Path of the Panther\, which tells the story of the first female panther to cross the Caloosahatchee River and why that’s so important for the survival of the Florida panther. \nYou say you’re not a scientist? Not a problem. Don’t have a lot of time? Not a problem. Monahan offers numerous ways that ordinary community members of all ages and interests can help in some way — and when we all lend a hand\, our efforts can add up to making a big difference. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:Waldo's Secret Art Walk
DESCRIPTION:“Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is a tribute to Waldo Sexton whose family and homestead is hosting this special art event this month on December 16th and 17th. Although you can experience Waldo’s found art throughout all of his local landmarks like the Ocean Grill and the Driftwood Inn\, the artist’s home is a treasure trove of his eclectic style. Waldo Sexton would have loved this art show on his homestead with artists lining pathways and tucked under shaded patios. Every turn in the path through the lush jungle garden reveals a new surprise placed with purpose by the artist. Spanish tile\, ornate iron gates\, a lantern\, a bell or a bronze statue calls out to the artist in all of us. Visitors will enjoy the work of thirty local artisans creating works in sculpture\, jewelry\, painting\, furniture\, fabric\, glass and metal. Events during the two days will feature readings by Sean Sexton from his new book “Portals”\, salsa dance performances\, classical guitar and more. There will also be gourmet food available from Dolly’s Table and a selection of craft beer from Sailfish Brewery. “Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is open from 11am to 5pm\, Saturday and Sunday\, December 16-17. SUMMARY:AAUW Book Review Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Education of an Unintentional Racist \nIf you’re born into a community and cultural environment that’s “like a stroll through the Norman Rockwell Museum\,” how do you learn to relate to a more diverse world? \nCarol Ludwig\, Executive Director of the Center for Spiritual Care in Vero Beach\, will consider that question as she reviews “Waking Up White: and Finding Myself in the Story of Race\,” by Debbie Irving at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women). The breakfast is 9:30-11:30am on Monday\, Jan. 8\, in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane\, Vero Beach. \nWaking Up White is the book Irving wishes someone had handed her decades ago. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions\, she offers a fresh perspective on bias\, stereotypes\, manners\, and tolerance. As Irving unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness\, being a good person\, and wanting to help people of color\, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race. She also explains why and how she’s changed the way she talks about racism\, works in racially mixed groups\, and understands the antiracism movement as a whole. \nCarol Ludwig\, spiritual director\, supervisor\, teacher and retreat leader\, presents widely in the U.S. and overseas. SUMMARY:Celebrating 60 years of Scholarships and Service
DESCRIPTION:As it marks 60 years of existence\, the Vero Beach branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, is proud to have provided thousands of dollars in scholarships for girls and women in Indian River County. And that’s just one of the group’s many efforts to promote education and opportunities for our local girls. \nFounded in 1964 by Lenore Feibel and Dorothy Forbes\, who served\, respectively\, as inaugural President and Vice President for Membership\, the organization began with 54 charter members who established a tradition of service that’s been upheld ever since. As one of the largest AAUW chapters in the state\, the local branch currently has over 100 members. \nBeginning with that 1964 inception\, the mission of AAUW-Vero Beach has been to provide scholarships and offer programs to empower women and girls in Indian River County. Some of its efforts have become local institutions: A children’s theater group started by AAUW became the Riverside Children’s Theater. The Senior Expo that connects senior citizens with organizations — created by AAUW in 2019 — grew so rapidly (despite being interrupted by COVID) that it was eventually handed off to the Senior Collaborative. Members of the local AAUW branch volunteer in numerous ways\, including as mentors for college-bound girls\, and tutoring children and adults through Literacy Services; members also have been involved in STEM programs such as the local Science Fair and Tech Trek. And the local branch helped the Treasure Coast Girls Coalition secure its first national grant from the AAUW-National organization in Washington\, D.C.\, in 2022. \nFor the community\, the AAUW-VB offers five Book Review Breakfasts each year\, which are free and open to the public\, featuring local experts discussing a book of current interest. The monthly speaker series from October to April features experts on a variety of topics. Recent topics have included issues surrounding gun violence\, how citizens can help advance science research\, mental health issues\, women in leadership on corporate boards\, and the influence of culture on girls’ self-perception. \nIn addition\, the AAUW-VB sponsored Book-Author Luncheons for many years\, featuring such authors as Debbie Macomber\, Charles Todd\, Lisa Unger\, Mary Alice Monroe\, and more. \nThe core purpose of the organization\, however\, has always been empowering women and girls by way of education. The types of financial assistance have grown with the times. For years\, we provided scholarships annually to women who had completed their associate degree at IRSC and were moving on toward a bachelor’s degree—totaling about $35\,000 since 2013. \nMore recently\, in 2019 the branch began providing EOC stipends of $2000 each to women pursuing their LPN degree through IRSC’s accelerated program\, and in 2022 the branch began awarding scholarships of $1000 each to young women graduating from a local high school and going on to college. About $30\,000 has been distributed through these two programs alone. \nAAUW-Vero Beach fundraisers are the primary source\, supported by the generosity of members\, for the scholarship funds. This year\, the branch is hosting two fundraisers: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (followed by a Royal Afternoon Tea)\, starring Sheryl Faye as the Queen (March 3\, Emerson Center)\, and a Mah Jongg “Play the New Card” event (April 12\, Bent Pine). More information is available on the website\, AAUWverobeach.org. \nPast members\, current members\, and guests are invited to join in the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the AAUW-Vero Beach at 11:15am Saturday\, Feb. 17\, at the Vero Beach Country Club. Cost is $35. Go to the website AAUWverobeach.org to register.
