DESCRIPTION:VERO BEACH\, FL (APRIL 13\, 2023):  All across our nation gun violence at schools continues to rise\, stricter controls on gun purchases remain a hot topic of debate\, and more and more parents are afraid to send their children to school.  There have already been more shootings\, with more victims\, so far in the first three months of 2023\, than during the same time frame last year.\nA group of Indian River County (IRC) parents have seen enough\, and are coming together to urge the School Board of IRC to increase focus on IRC Elementary school security.  Even though IRC schools remains in compliance with state law requiring all public schools to either have law enforcement or other armed personnel present\, IRC schools fall behind in security resources when compared to other southeastern Florida county school districts.\nA worried parent explained\, “Middle school and High school students need increased security.  However; when it comes to an active shooter\, these teens can run\, they can fight!  Elementary aged students are targeted because they are defenseless.  We need to take every extra security measures to protect our youngest children.”\nThe concerned parents met with Jon Teske\, Director of School Safety & Emergency Operations and with Sheriff’s Captain Milo Thornton\, School Safety Division\, who is running for Sheriff of IRC in 2024.  After the meeting\, Teske and Thornton encouraged parents to take their requests for safer schools to the next School Board of IRC meeting\, to be held on Monday\, April 24\, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.\, located at the School District of Indian River County at 6500 57th Street.\nIf you would like to support IRC parents in their effort to make IRC schools safer\, please attend the upcoming School Board of IRC meeting.  To voice your concerns at the meeting\, you will need to arrive at 5:30 p.m. to fill out a Speaker’s Form.  If you are unable to attend\, a live-stream option of the School Board meeting will be featured on the School District of Indian River County YouTube Channel.

DESCRIPTION:Community caregivers and interested persons are invited to a free series of “Conversations on End of Life” to learn how to plan for and care for dying loved ones\,. The first session\, October 12th\, will be a conversation with participants to share their thoughts and questions about death and dying. At the second session\, November 9th\, participants will receive the Doulagivers Level 1 Community Caregivers Training\, a world-renowned program for caregivers to help prepare them for caring for loved ones at the end of life. At the third session Dec 7th\, participants will learn how to prepare advance directives that reflect their personal choices for end-of-life care. The workshops are led by Floradoula LLC\, which provides certified end-of-life-doulas to assist patients and families in need of support planning for and at the time of end of life. Workshops are free but pre-registration is required by calling or emailing the Center for Spiritual Care above.

Regardless of one’s political stance\, one thing most of us can agree on is that we’d like to keep our loved ones – and ourselves – safe from gun violence while in school and church\, shopping\, or on the street. \nThe Vero Beach Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host a non-partisan discussion\, “Coping with Gun Violence in Indian River County: What We Need to Know” at 1pm on Saturday\, Oct. 21\, in the Indian River County (IRC) Sheriff’s Office Administrative Building. Panelists will discuss ways that gun violence affects our community\, ways to limit violence\, and solutions to counter the effects of gun violence on our and others’ mental health. They will also provide information on the state laws regarding guns\, the rights covered under the 2nd Amendment\, and actions we might take with our government representatives. \nPanelists include Kristen Azari\, volunteer with Moms Demand Action; Wes Samons\, Executive Director Mental Health Collaborative of IRC; and Eric Flowers\, IRC Sheriff. \nThe meeting is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Only registered participants will be admitted. DESCRIPTION:Community caregivers are invited to a free series of “Conversations on End of Life” to learn how to plan for and care for dying loved ones\, At this session\, November 9th\, participants will receive the Doulagivers Level 1 Community Caregivers Training\, a world-renowned program for caregivers to help prepare them for caring for loved ones at the end of life. At the third session Dec 7th\, participants will learn how to prepare advance directives that reflect their personal choices for end-of-life care. The workshops are led by Floradoula LLC\, which provides certified end-of-life-doulas to assist patients and families in need of support planning for and at the time of end of life. Workshops are free but pre-registration is required by calling or emailing the Center for Spiritual Care.
