SUMMARY:Ballet Vero Beach in "Founding Fathers" at the VBHS Performing Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:The official opening of our expanded 2019-2020 Season pays tribute to Ballet Vero Beach’s very own founding fathers. Program 1 features a world premiere work by Ballet Master and Principal Dancer Camilo A. Rodriguez\, who\, throughout our history\, has emerged as one of the company’s strongest purveyors of the Ballet Vero Beach aesthetic. \nAlso on the program are Rodriguez’s poignant and emotional solo\, Harlequin/Pierrot\, which makes its main stage debut\, and\, the company premiere of one of Artistic Director Adam Schnell’s seminal works\, Friends and Lovers. Created while Schnell was resident choreographer with Sarasot ballet\, Friends and Lovers uses Max Bruch’s sweeping Concerto for Two Pianos to reflect on humanity’s quest for love and companionship.

SUMMARY:Dine and Dialogue with Interfaith Community of IRC
DESCRIPTION:Dine and Dialogue: The Interfaith Community of Indian River County will sponsor a Dine and Dialogue throughout the year\, 2020\, on the last Monday of each Month. January’s Dine and Dialogue will be held on Monday\, Jan 27\, 2020 at CJ Canons and the topic will be “Grace”. \nEach month\, a topic will be selected and there will be one moderator and a panel of four or five local area faith leaders to present that month’s topic in light of their faith or religion. After opening with the perspectives of our panelists\, our participants will have the opportunity to join in with questions\, answers\, and discussions of their own. \nThese dialogues are not to convince or to convert but simple to present the different approaches through the various faiths represented in the local area. We are hoping that those who attend will walk away from these events with more understanding than they came with. \nThere is no cost for the Dialogue. If you would like to eat dinner from a limited CJ Canons menu at the program\, the cost will be $20.00 RSVP by calling 772.569.4700 or via e-mail at InterfaithCommunityTCFL@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Finest Hours: The Coast Guard's Most Daring Rescue & the Disney Movie
DESCRIPTION:Michael Tougias\, co-author of “The Finest Hours\,” tells the true story of how two separate oil tankers split in half in a 1952 Nor’easter off Cape Cod and how the Disney movie about the disaster was made. He uses slides to illustrate the harrowing tale of the rescue efforts made amidst towering waves and blinding snow in one of the most dangerous shoals in the world. \nFunding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. SUMMARY:Screenwriting: How to Write a Short Film
DESCRIPTION:Films under 20 minutes are more popular than ever\, easier to make than a feature\, but don’t always play by the same rules. If you’ve often thought of making your own short video\, join Xaque Gruber as he leads the next Laura (Riding) Jackson Adult Writers Workshop on Saturday\, February 15\, 2020. Through videos and brainstorming\, you can learn how to craft a powerful short film. \nXaque Gruber moved to Vero Beach from Los Angeles in 2016 to be near his parents\, David and Joann Gruber\, after his father was diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. In happier times\, the younger Gruber had made brief annual visits to our city. After three sometimes difficult\, often joyful years here\, he has decided to make Vero his home base while continuing his work in film. \n“I felt very bogged down in Los Angeles\,” he says. “I would never have made these shorts if I’d stayed in Los Angeles.” \nA selection of films from his 13-year West Coast career comprised the greater part of the “Hollywood to Vero” program. These included his 2007 interview with Phyllis Diller on her 90th birthday; a clip of Gruber’s appearances as “Francisco\,” a fictional party planner on the FOXTV reality show\, “Hell’s Kitchen”; a segment from a 2008 TV docu-series Gruber directed profiling cancer survivor Mary Olsen Kelly; and a movie trailer for the 2012 feature film “Broken Roads\,” a drama for which Gruber wrote the script. \nGruber also introduced “Humans of Vero Beach\,” a documentary short directed by Vero resident Kenneth George that was dedicated to the memory of Gruber’s father\, who died from complications of Alzheimer’s last May. When the elder Gruber entered a care facility here in 2017\, Xaque found a way to enliven not only his father’s days there\, but those of other patients\, as well. The film features an exuberant Gruber in a colorful chef’s apron\, leading sing-alongs in the common room with residents whose illness does not preclude their capacity for creative fulfillment. \n“Screenwriting: How to Write a Short Film” is the third in a series of Adult Writers Workshops presented by the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation. All skill levels are welcome! Workshops are held at LRJF Writing Center at 1914 14th Avenue in Vero Beach from 9:30 am -12:30pm and registration is $45 and is available online at www.lauraridingjackson.org. If questions\, more information may be available 772.569.6718. The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is a 501 ©3 tax exempt organization. \nVisit www.lauraridingjackson.org or call 772-569-6718

SUMMARY:FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute's Harmful Algal Bloom Lab & Taskforce
DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of a new lecture series launched by the Sebastian Inlet District\, join us to learn more about FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute’s Harmful Algal Bloom Lab and Taskforce\, and ongoing research on algal blooms from scientist and principal investigator Dr. Malcolm McFarland. \nDr. McFarland’s research is focused on understanding patterns of phytoplankton distribution\, abundance\, and species composition. His work combines laboratory experiments\, microscope-based analyses of water samples\, and the development of new techniques to observe phytoplankton population dynamics with high spatial and temporal resolution. \nHe is particularly interested in harmful algal blooms due to their impacts on human and animal health\, and their apparent global increase associated with climate change. His research is important to understanding the role of phytoplankton in aquatic ecosystems at local and global scales. \nAll sessions will be held in the 2nd Floor classroom at BG’s Surfside Grill & Adventures at Sebastian Inlet State Park (North entrance). Sessions are free with regular park admission fees.
